New Research Adds To Evidence That Vaping Is Significantly Less Harmful Than Smoking

Analysis

A new study has shed light on how vaping and smoking differ in their impact on cells and DNA, adding to the growing scientific evidence that vaping is significantly less harmful than smoking.

The study, which was peer-reviewed and published in the journal Mutagenesis, utilised Toxys' ToxTracker suite of stem-cell-based in-vitro assays to compare e-liquid samples and their vapour to the smoke of combustible cigarettes. The study, which was conducted by scientists at Imperial Brands, marks the first time that the results of an analysis on e-liquids and their vapour using the ToxTracker system have been published.

The scientists used the ToxTracker system to assess the potential impact of vape juice and its vapour and cigarette smoke on cellular functioning.

Using the ToxTracker system, the researchers were able to assess the potential impact across six reporter cell lines by examining oxidative stress, protein and DNA damage, and activation of a gene that is known to have a role in tumour suppression as well as cell cycle regulation, the p53 gene.

Lukasz Czekala, the study's lead author and Senior Pre-Clinical Toxicologist at Imperial Brands, indicated in a public release that the study's data "adds to the weight of scientific evidence demonstrating vape products offer significant harm reduction potential compared to combustible cigarettes."

Indications of DNA damaging potential in cells exhibited by vape liquids and their vapour extracts was entirely absent or vastly reduced when compared to cigarette smoke, the study's data showed.

After testing 1.6% nicotine salt, 1.6% freebase nicotine, and nicotine-free (0%), the researchers found that the tests produced the same results, indicating that nicotine content had no impact on the results.

Testing nicotine alone, the researchers found that it took a concentration of over 40,000 times what would be found in the blood from typical smoking to produce an oxidative stress response.

Dr Grant O'Connell, Head of Tobacco Harm Reduction Science at Imperial Brands, indicated in a statement that this latest study "adds to the established body of scientific data that shows vaping products, when manufactured to high quality and safety standards, have significant tobacco harm reduction potential relative to continued cigarette smoking."

At Vaper Empire, we take the quality of our vaping products seriously, which is why all of our vape liquids are manufactured to EU standards inside state-of-the-art cleanroom facilities using premium ingredients and pharmaceutical-grade nicotine.
