Everything You Need To Know About Vaping And Driving

Can You Vape In Your Car While Driving?

It is absolutely possible to vape while operating a motor vehicle. If you do puff on your e-cigarette while you're behind the wheel, you should do so in the safest manner possible. Here are some tips:

  • Avoid cloud chasing while you're driving and be sure to crack a window open so that the vapour from your device can exit the vehicle. A car full of vapour may hinder your ability to clearly see the road ahead of you and a police officer may pull you over if the vapour appears to be impairing your vision.
  • Be courteous of others in and around your vehicle. If there are other people near your vehicle, they may not appreciate the vapour pouring out of your car. If you have passengers, you may want to refrain from vaping in the vehicle.
  • Avoid adjusting or configuring your device while you're moving. If you need to change the pod or cart, top off the tank, replace the coil, or charge the battery, be sure to pull your car over first and park it in a safe spot.
  • Make sure your vape is ready for use before you begin driving if you intend on using it while you drive.

Is It Legal To Vape And Drive?

As there is no law specifically prohibiting the use of e-cigarettes while driving in the US, UK, or AU at the time of writing, it is not technically illegal at this time to use an e-cigarette while operating a motor vehicle. However, there are certain circumstances in which it is illegal in some areas to vape in a car, such as when minors are present, and there are existing laws in some areas that may be applicable. For instance, there are laws on safety and distracted driving in some areas that may allow a police officer to pull a driver over for vaping while they are driving.

Laws primarily intended to prohibit the use of mobile phones while driving may cover the use of vaping devices depending on the language used in these laws, as vaping devices, along with smartphones, are technically handheld electronic devices.

In light of all this, vapers must be aware of any laws that may exist in the area in which they are driving that may cover the use of vaping devices while driving. In addition, vapers who do vape while they drive should do so in as safe a manner as possible and only if it is legal to do so.

In addition to all of this, there are some places where it is illegal to possess an e-cigarette. Before travelling to an area, make sure you know what the vaping laws are so that you can abide by them.

Can You Tell If Someone Vapes In A Car?

If someone is actively vaping in a car it may be possible not only to smell the vapour produced by their e-cigarette but to see it as well. However, the vapour produced by e-cigarettes dissipates quickly and does not linger for a long period of time like the odour left behind by cigarette smoke. As a result, e-cigarette use in a car is generally only detectable while someone is actively vaping or immediately after they have finished vaping, assuming a window is left open a crack. If no windows are open, the odour may linger longer, however, it is unlikely that the odour will be detectable in the vehicle the following day.

Should You Vape While You Drive?

Ideally, you should not vape while you drive. In fact, when possible, you should keep both hands on the steering wheel while operating a motor vehicle. If you do intend on vaping while driving then it is wise to do so in the safest manner possible and to be considerate of others while doing so.
