How Long Do Vape Coils Last?

Vaper Empire Vibe Series Vape Coils
Asking how long a vape coil lasts is like asking how long a piece of string is---it is a question we hear all the time and, unfortunately, the answer is not as straightforward as you may immediately think. The lifespan of a vape coil depends on several factors including your device, how often you vape, and what type of e-liquid you vape with.

Whilst it is true that vape coils, as well as e-liquids, will need to be replaced every so often as they are used up, it is hard to put an exact figure on frequency.

What Is a Vape Coil?

Before we dive in and try to answer the question of how long a vape coil lasts, it makes sense to cover what a vape coil is.

A vape coil is a component within an e-cig or vaporiser that creates the vapour. Essentially, it is a small roll of resistant coil made from heat conductors such as copper or nickel. When the coil heats up, it also heats up the e-liquid absorbed within the wick (to which the coil is attached) which creates vapour.

How Long Do Vape Coils Last?

As we said, it all boils down to how you vape, and how often.

Generally speaking, however, new coils can last anywhere from one to two weeks if you vape often, or two to four weeks if you vape infrequently. These figures are based on general use and the assumption that most vapers won't employ techniques to prolong the life of a vape coil.

Are you an ex-smoker who vapes as often as you once smoked cigarettes? You will be looking at a coil change weekly or every other week. That's the general consensus.

Making Vape Coils Last Longer

We encourage vapers to properly look after their coils. It is something that is very easy to do, and it prolongs the coil's life, saving you money in the long-term.

Priming a Vape Coil

The best way to prolong a vape coil's life is to break a new one in through a process known as priming. You need to do this every time you switch out an old coil for a new one to get the best experience and a longer-lasting coil.

Here's how you can do it.

1. Saturate the wick

After disposing of your old coil and screwing the new one in place, you will need to saturate the wick in e-liquid. Then, look for small e-liquid holes on the coil's head. Slowly add a drop of e-liquid in each hole to saturate the wick, and one directly on the coil's head to get e-liquid to the wick's centre.

2. Take some hits while the vape is turned off

When you have saturated the wick, reassemble your vape and attach it to the battery. Then, take around five hits while the vape is off (i.e. drags without activating the vape's electronics). This allows the e-liquid to be dragged from the tank to the wick's cotton.

3. Vape from low to high

Because the coil expands and contracts when it is heated and cooled, it is a good idea to slowly break in the new coil's wiring. You can do this by starting your new coil off with a lower wattage. Steadily increase the wattage back to your go-to setting after a few incremental hits.

Tips for Making a Vape Coil Last Longer

There are a few other tips and tricks you can follow to make your vape coil last longer.

1. Carry out regular cleaning

Just because you've installed your coil doesn't mean you can ignore it. Depending on how frequently (and heavily) you vape, your coil will start to collect dirt and gunk, much like a filter does, after a few days' worth of usage. Therefore, make sure you regularly clear out your coil. You can do this by rinsing it under hot water, blowing out excess e-liquid, and taking apart and cleaning your entire vape.

2. Avoid dry hits

Dry hits happen when there isn't enough e-liquid to enable proper heating of the coil. If there is not enough e-liquid available, the coil will heat the wicking material. This will cause the wick to become damaged and burnt out, resulting in a lower-quality vaping experience and the potential faster burning out of your coil. You can avoid dry hits by waiting between hits, not letting your tank drain of e-liquid, and by not over-pressing your vape's power button.

How to Tell When A Coil Needs Changing

There are a few tell-tale signs that will indicate to you when your coil needs changing. Unsurprisingly, these signs directly relate to how your overall vaping experience changes.

If you notice that your favourite e-liquid suddenly doesn't quite taste the same, this usually means that your coil has stopped working and that it needs to be changed. Similarly, if you notice a burnt taste whilst vaping, this is a sign that the coil has burnt out and is no longer doing its job properly because it will not heat up.

Other symptoms of a dead coil include a gurgling sound when inhaling and the leakage of e-liquid.

It is usually very, very easy to tell when a coil is done.

How to Change a Coil

We highly recommend looking up a video guide if you are unsure, however, the process can be summed up into four simple bullet points:

  • Separate your vape's tank from its battery.
  • Clean out the tank and set it aside.
  • Unscrew the old coil from the tank's cap and toss it away.
  • Clean the cap, screw the new coil in, prime it, and reassemble your vape.
It really is that easy to do. After doing it once, you'll know exactly how to do it again!
