What Is Vaping?

Vaping, over the last few years especially, has taken the world by storm; it has never been more popular. For some, vaping is a means to an end---a way to cut down on smoking and perhaps stop altogether---whereas for some, it is a fun pastime.

The various tasty flavours, the odour-free output (that is, after the "vape cloud" has dissipated), and the culture surrounding it have all contributed to its popularity worldwide.

Although this popularity is at an all-time high, there are still many people who don't know much, or anything, about vaping. If you are one of these people who is somewhat lost in all the lingo and terminology, you have come to the right place.

In this short guide, we are going to explore the ins and outs of vaping.

What is Vaping?

Vaping is the act of using an electronic cigarette ("e-cig") to inhale an e-liquid ("vape juice") in vapour form. These vape juices come in all types of flavours and can either be nicotine-free or contain nicotine in varying concentrations.

Vapour is, by definition, any "substance diffused or suspended in the air, especially one normally liquid or solid". In the case of e-cigs, the vapour is the gaseous state of any e-liquid that has been inhaled and subsequently exhaled. Although the vapour produced through vaping can be thicker and denser than smoke, the scent produced is much nicer due to the flavourings used (and not to mention a whole lot less toxic).

To create the vapour, a vaporiser---the device that transforms vape juice into vapour for inhalation---uses a heating element within the e-cig's "atomiser" or "clearomiser". Vaporisers are rechargeable using USB charging cables or charging packs, much like a smartphone.

E-Cigs vs Vape Pens vs Advanced Kits

Vapes come in all shapes and sizes. Some come as "vape pens" that look more like traditional cigarettes whereas others come as box mod kits, pod vapes, and your traditional e-cigarette, which is known as a "cig-a-like" as a result of its appearance closely mimicking that of a traditional cigarette. There are a dizzying range of vapes available on the market and we recommend doing further research on this topic.

Which one is right for you, however, will depend entirely on what you want to use your vape for---for example, is it to help you quit smoking or for the entertainment factor?

If you are looking to quit smoking, an e-cigarette or vape pen will be ideal. If, however, you want to participate in vaping for the entertainment factor (e.g. to do tricks) then you will be better served by more advanced box mod kits.

What About Vape Mods?

Vape mods are typically associated with larger box mod kits. In fact, many box mod kits are vape mods in their own right.

"Vape mod" is a collective term for any type of Advanced Personal Vaporizer (APV). These devices, as we mentioned, come in a massive range of variety. Larger batteries, altered designs, and more advanced, harder-wearing components for prolonged use and the creation of thicker, denser, longer-lasting vapour clouds are just a few examples.

If you are new to the vaping scene, we advise that you avoid APVs… at least for now. These are not a great place to start---learn the basics using an e-cig or vape pen first. As the saying goes, you have to learn to walk before you can run. As it pertains to vaping, vape mods are often the least user-friendly new vapers, which is why we recommend easier to use vapes like our V-Pack II Series cig-a-like kit and our Vantage Series vape pens - both of which, just like the rest of the vapes we offer, are incredibly easy to use and perfect for beginners.

Vape Juice: What is It, and How is it Made?

Vape juice, officially known as e-liquid, is what is turned into the vapour that is inhaled and subsequently exhaled to produce a vape cloud. The vapour produced by e-cigarettes, technically speaking, is an aerosol, which is commonly referred to as vapour. Vape juices, as we mentioned earlier, come in all types of flavour; there are literally thousands of them.

Depending on the type, brand, and flavour(s) you buy, the exact makeup and ingredients of your vape juice will vary. There are, however, two main ingredients that form part of any vape juice, period.

Vegetable Glycerin (VG)

Sweet, non-toxic, and vegetable-based, VG liquid is the primary ingredient. It helps to produce the vapour and simulate the smoking "sensation". Vape juices that have a higher concentration of VG will be a lot more sweet and smoother on the uptake.

Propylene Glycol (PG)

The other primary ingredient is PG. This is commonly found in food additives (e.g. food colouring) and medicines. Again, this is a non-toxic ingredient and helps to simulate the "throaty" sensation of smoking. Vape juices with a higher concentration of PG will be a lot thinner in consistency. The more PG there is in an e-juice, the more of a throat hit sensation the user will experience. For some former smokers and those who are looking to quit smoking with the help of vaping, e-juices higher in PG that offer more of a throat hit sensation are preferable.

VG:PG Ratios

The ratio of VG to PG will have an impact on how the vapour feels when you inhale it. As a newbie, it is a case of experimenting and finding your "sweet spot". Start off with a 50:50 ratio and then adjust each one up or down until you find the one that you like. Alternatively, you can stick with Vaper Empire e-liquids and enjoy expertly crafted e-liquids that contain what we believe to be the perfect balance of PG to VG.

For reference, higher VG blends are generally smoother and sweeter whereas higher PG blends are generally more intense.

Other Ingredients

VG and PG are combined with natural and/or artificial flavours to give the vape juice a distinct and pleasant taste. Without them, you would be vaping tasteless, odourless vapour (or bitter vapour where nicotine is present).

Flavours include everything from breakfast foods to alcoholic cocktails and fresh fruit to sweet candies. If you can think of a flavour, literally any flavour in the world, there is a good chance a vape juice has been made of it. Here at Vaper Empire, we craft all of our vape juices from premium ingredients, ensuring that all of our customers experience the best that vaping has to offer, and we offer a wide range of e-juice flavours to choose from, leaving our customers with a world of decisions to make when it comes to which e-juice flavours to vape.
