What Is The Vapor From Vaping?

There are plenty of people out there who think that vapor and smoke are the same things. They are not, though; the only similarities between the two are how they look and the nicotine that they contain---although, nicotine is not always present in vapor as some vapers prefer to use nicotine-free e-liquids. The differences between vapor produced by an e-cigarette and smoke produced by a real cigarette are huge.

By far, the leading reason for this misunderstanding is the fact that people incorrectly call vapor "vape smoke", a term which is both misleading and incorrect.

Vaping does not produce smoke. Period.

The Difference Between Vapor and Smoke

To really understand why vapor and smoke are completely different, it helps to look at the literal definitions of the two.

What is Smoke?

By definition, smoke is "a visible suspension of carbon or other particles in the air, typically one emitted from a burning substance."

Smoke is the result of combustion or burning. When combustion takes place, oxidation (a chemical reaction) takes place to form new chemicals and by-products. So, when you light up a cigarette, you are burning it, and this causes thousands of new chemicals to be created. These chemicals are often harmful and cancerous, and smokers breathe them all in.

That is why smoking is so dangerous; thousands of different chemicals are produced and a large number of these can cause cancer. Some of these chemicals include:

  • Arsenic
  • Chromium
  • Cadmium
  • Methanol
  • Acetylene
  • Ammonia
  • Carbon Monoxide
  • Cyanide

What is Vapor?

On the other hand, vapor is "a substance diffused or suspended in the air, especially one normally liquid or solid."

The chemicals that are found in vapor are the same as those found in the substance that has been vaporised. So, if you vaporise water then only water will be present in the vapor. So, unlike burning cigarettes, vaporising e-liquid is not known to create any new chemicals or compounds.

E-Liquid Ingredients

There are a few key ingredients that all vape juices contain. Whilst some e-liquid manufacturers may include additional ingredients, many do not. The four ingredients that are present in all* vape juices are:

  • Water
  • Flavourings
  • PG and VG with a varying ratio
  • Nicotine (*aside from nicotine-free e-liquid)

Although there are some e-liquids that are 100% PG or 100% VG, more often than not there is a mixture of the two as a ratio. This gives vapers more choice as PG-heavy e-liquids perform differently than VG-heavy e-liquids and striking the right balance takes time.

Let's take a look at these in turn.

E-liquids are water-based solutions. The ingredients are suspended in water which is then vaporised.

Unflavoured vape juice isn't particularly popular as most vapers tend to prefer flavoured e-liquids, which is why most e-liquids are infused with some form of flavour. These can be natural (e.g. strawberry, mint) or artificial (bubble-gum, cupcake.)

As you are probably aware, nicotine is an addictive chemical that gets people hooked on cigarettes. It is often included in e-liquids so that people who want to quit smoking can still get a nicotine fix whilst keeping away from harmful cigarette smoke.

E-liquid nicotine strengths vary from 0mg (nicotine-free) all the way up to 36mg (super, super strong), and sometimes higher. At Vaper Empire, we stock e-liquids between 0mg and 24mg.

Over time, some ex-smokers will reduce the nicotine concentration of their e-liquids as their cravings disappear. The end-goal for many of these vapers is to get down to the 0mg or 6mg level.

It's not all about smokers, though. Nicotine-free e-liquids are also used by people who vape out of pure enjoyment.

PG and VG

Vegetable Glycerin and Propylene Glycol are found in e-liquids in varying ratios. More often than not, people choose a PG:VG ratio of 50/50.

VG is a natural chemical derived from vegetable oils. In e-liquids, it is used to give a 'thick', smooth sensation when it is inhaled. It is slightly sweet, too.

PG, on the other hand, is a by-product of petroleum. It is used to give that characteristic throat 'hit' experienced when smoking. Despite being a petroleum by-product, it is non-toxic and is recognised as safe by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States.

So, those who want a smoother vaping experience should opt for an e-liquid that has a higher concentration of VG to PG whereas those who want a more intense experience should opt for an e-liquid that has a higher concentration of PG to VG.

It's not an exact science, though---you'll find your perfect balance over time!

So, what is the Vapor from Vaping?

To sum all that information up…

The vapor from vaping is simply an aerosol, which is commonly referred to as vapor, that contains water, flavouring, PG and/or VG, and nicotine unless you are using a nicotine-free e-liquid.

That's it.

Does This Mean Vaping is Completely Safe?

Not exactly.

There is still a lot we don't yet know about vaping---you have to remember that vaping is a pretty new phenomenon and researchers have a lot of catching up to do.

Recent research conducted in the UK, however, suggests that vaping is as much as 95% less harmful than smoking traditional cigarettes.

So, if you are a current smoker and you are looking to quit, vaping really is a no-brainer. It is cheaper, likely less harmful, smells better, is more customisable, and does not produce the tar found in cigarette smokes that harms your health, stains your teeth, and ruins your furniture.
