What Are Vape Pens?

What Are Vape Pens?
Vape pens are growing at lightning-fast rates; you may very well see multiple people using them each and every day.

They have become popular thanks to the worldwide growth of vaping and everything that comes with it. Vape pens are one of a few different ways one can participate in vaping and they are undoubtedly one of the more popular methods of doing so.

Regarded by many as the best and most convenient tool to vape with, these slender and relatively discreet devices are becoming a more common sight as time goes by and 'vape culture' spreads.

So, What Are Vape Pens Exactly?

Pen-style vaping devices are long, slender plastic or metal tubes that look like pens… hence the name! They come in a huge variety of designs, colours, styles, and vary from being extremely simplistic to having lots of different buttons and adjustable options; no one vape pen is the same and there are thousands of brands that make them, including our own, Vaper Empire.

You can get big ones, small ones, cheap ones, expensive ones, large and more powerful ones, discreet and smaller ones… the list goes on.

In contrast to e-cigs (also called cig-a-likes), they deliver a far more powerful and longer-lasting vaping experience. Both e-cigs and vape pens do the same thing, they are simply two different methods of delivery.

The Anatomy of a Vape Pen

If you have never seen or laid your hands on a vape pen before, they can be quite confusing. The truth is, they are actually very simple devices that only consist of a few different parts. These include:

  • A Tank: Every vape pen either has a tank or a cartridge. Tanks are refillable whereas some cartridges need to be replaced when they are empty. Tanks and cartridges hold e-liquids which are used to create vapour.
  • An Atomiser: The atomiser is a small heating element---usually consisting of a porous wick with a metal coil wrapped around it---that is used to convert e-liquid into vapour through heating.
  • Buttons/Sensors: Depending on your vape pen, it will have one or the other. Sensor vape pens turn on when you take a drag from them whereas button-activated ones heat up the e-liquid when you press the button.
  • A Battery: All vape pens are powered by a small battery. Depending on your vape pen, the battery's power will vary, and this will have an impact on the amount of vapour that your pen can produce.
That's about it, really.

Some vape pens have a few additional features (e.g. voltage control, like our very own Vaper Empire V-Twist Series) and some are just simple, bog-standard devices with button-press activation; all vape pens are different.

There are more complicated devices available such as 'vape mods' and we will cover these in a little more detail shortly.

How to Use a Vape Pen

Most vape pens can be used right out of the box and require little-to-no assembly or preparation---the most that you will need to do is fill up your tank with e-liquid or screw in an e-liquid cartridge.

We recommend placing your vape pen on charge prior to using it, though. Some vape pen batteries will come pre-charged or with some juice (no pun intended!) in them, but it is best to give it a quick charge first to be on the safe side and ensure a smooth and hassle-free introduction to your new device.

If assembly is required, instructions should be provided. Even if they're not, vape pens are very simple, and you should have no problems putting yours together.

Once your device is charged, assembled, and fully working, you are ready to get started. Here's how:

  1. Place the vape pen's tip in your mouth
  2. Press and hold down the button (or take a hard drag if there's no button)
  3. Inhale the vapour that is produced
  4. Exhale the vapour
That's it---you're vaping!

Whilst the device is very simple, there are a few tips you can take inspiration from:

  • Don't take too hard of a drag or this may ruin your hit
  • New button-activated pens may need to be pressed a few times to activate
  • Don't fill your e-liquid all the way to the top of the tank
  • Don't overdo the vape; you don't want to burn out your atomiser
  • Check to make sure what your button-activated pen's safety features are. Some vape pens require buttons to be pressed in a certain pattern to activate the pen.

What's the Difference Between a Vape Pen and 'Vape Mod'?

People often get the two confused, however, they are two very different devices.

'Vape mods' deliver the ultimate vaping experience and are designed for people more aligned towards the entertainment aspect of vaping rather than the stop smoking aspect. This is because vape mods are far more powerful and functional; they are designed to give the biggest 'hit' and produce the thickest, densest vape clouds possible.

They often have bigger tanks, more powerful and longer-lasting batteries, and more potent flavour. Their components (coils, wicks, materials, etc.) are also typically different, too.

Once you have gotten used to vape pens and know a little bit more about what vaping is and what you like, you may want to consider looking into a vape mod kit to up your overall experience.
