A new longitudinal study examining the changes in vape juice flavour preferences has found that vapers across all demographics tend to migrate away from tobacco, menthol, and mint flavours over time, instead opting for sweeter e-juice flavours like our Butterscotch e-liquid.
The Study
The researchers behind the study analysed the results of two online e-cigarette surveys taken by 383 adult participants with an average age of 44 ± 12 years. Of those surveyed, 86% exclusively used e-cigarettes and 13% reported using both e-cigs and tobacco products. The baseline survey was conducted in 2012-2014 and the follow-up survey was conducted in 2017-2019.
Participants were asked the name of their preferred liquid flavour and to list all of the vape juice flavours that they had vaped in the last 30 days. Preference for flavour was then classified using the Penn State Three-Step Flavour Classification method.
Vapers Migrate Towards Sweeter Vape Juice Flavours

Preference for fruit flavoured e-liquids remained stable with 23% at baseline and follow-up. Preference for chocolate, candy, and other sweets rose significantly over time, jumping from 16% at baseline to 29% at follow-up. Other flavours saw a slight increase.
Younger adults between the ages of 18 and 45 were more apt to migrate to sweet flavours, as were vapers who exclusively used e-cigarettes and not both e-cigs and other tobacco products (31% versus 19%).
Nearly 7% of the survey's participants reported flavour-associated adverse reactions, which were primarily respiratory irritations.
Access To E-Juice Flavours Is Important
When faced with a hypothetical regulatory scenario in which non-tobacco e-liquid flavours were banned, nearly 50% of the study's participants reported that they would "find a way" to purchase their preferred e-juice flavour or personally add flavouring agents in a bid to create their desired flavour.
The study's findings show that access to flavours is important for long-term e-cigarette users and exclusive e-cigarette users.
