Can Vaping Help You Stop Smoking?

So, you want to quit smoking? Great---get ready to join millions of others who, sick and tired of useless nicotine patches, switched to vaping to help them kick their dangerous habits! Before you dive in, though, there are a few things that you need to know, and we are going to cover those in this article.

Whether you have seen other people using e-cigarettes, have heard about vaping and all the fuss surrounding it online, or have just come across it for the very first time, there is a lot to take on board.

Can Vaping Help You Stop Smoking?

In short, yes; vaping can help you quit smoking.

That being said, though, vaping and e-cigarettes are not 'silver bullets' that will lead to a smoke-free lifestyle overnight. It takes time and, for some, it can be difficult at first. Stick with vaping, though, and you will find that, over time, the desire to puff a cigarette disappears entirely.

Quitting smoking using e-cigarettes and vapes is pretty easy for the most part. When push comes to shove, it is simply a process of slowly weaning yourself away from cigarettes and your nicotine addiction by using a product that contains nicotine.

That may sound confusing, but we guarantee that it will make a lot more sense soon.

Vaping 101: What You Need to Know

Although we can't cover everything here, we are going to go over the basics.

What is Vaping?

Vaping is literally the act of inhaling and exhaling an aerosol---commonly referred to as "vapour"---that is produced by an e-cigarette, vaporizer, or similar device.

It is something that has grown rapidly in popularity over the last decade or so. Today, millions of people worldwide participate in vaping and it has spawned its own community and subculture.

Many people vape to help them quit smoking, however, an overwhelming number do it for the fun and entertainment aspects, too.

How do Vapes and E-Cigs Work?

E-cigarettes, vaporizers, and other vaping products are very simple devices often made up of only four constituent components---a battery, a tank, a heating element, and a mouthpiece. The battery powers the device which, using its heating element, heats up e-liquid drawn from the tank and turns it into an aerosol vapour that can then be inhaled and exhaled.

Although the design of e-cigs and vapes are invariably simple, there are thousands of different products on the market that are very different from one another. These products include everything from simple, manual e-cigs to powerful and adjustable vapes.

E-Liquids and Vape Juices

E-liquids (also known as 'vape juices') are what the vaping device turns into an aerosol.

As you may well know, vape juices come in a huge range of different flavours and strengths. This is partly what has made vaping the phenomenon it is; vape juices cover all flavours and concoctions imaginable, from simple fruit flavours (apple, strawberry, and mango) to wild and wonderful flavours (rhubarb & custard, red lemonade, and sweet menthol) with varying nicotine strengths.

There literally is a flavour for everyone.

E-liquids usually contain a few simple ingredients:

  • Flavourings (natural or artificial);
  • Water;
  • Propylene glycol (PG);
  • Vegetable glycerine (VG); and
  • Nicotine

That's it.

E-Liquid Nicotine Strengths

As well as there being a flavour for everyone, there is a nicotine strength for everyone.

Vape juices commonly come in nicotine strengths from 0mg/mL (nicotine free) to 36mg/mL+. Nicotine-free vape juices are commonly used by non-smokers who vape for the entertainment value whereas higher nicotine strengths are used by people who are just switching from a life of heavy smoking to a life of being smoke-free.

Over time, ex-smokers will tone down the amount of nicotine their vape juices contain as their own nicotine cravings subside and disappear---more on this later.

How is Vaping Different to Smoking?

Vaping and smoking are two entirely different things.

Smoking involves the combustion and burning of tobacco. When this combustion takes place, thousands of new chemicals, some cancer-causing, are formed through the resultant oxidation reaction. Some of these chemicals include the likes of arsenic, cadmium, and formaldehyde.

On the other hand, vaping involves the vaporising of e-liquid. When this takes place, no new chemicals or by-products are created; what you exhale contains the same ingredients as the e-liquid in your bottle. Add to this the fact that vaping is tar-free and it's easy to see how the two might appear similar but are in reality quite different from one another.

This is this reason why vaping is commonly considered 'safer' (disclaimer: this is according to Public Health England's latest e-cigarette evidence review, which has found vaping e-cigs to be "likely 95% less harmful" than smoking conventional cigarettes.)

In short, smoking is expensive, causes cancer, ruins your teeth, has a residual bad smell, and causes damage to whatever comes into contact with smoke.

Vaping is: a lot cheaper, does not stain your teeth brown, does not have a residual smell, and does not cause damage to furniture or automobile interiors.

How Does Vaping Help People Stop Smoking?

Nicotine is an addictive chemical found in cigarettes; it is the nicotine that causes people to become addicted to smoking. By providing an alternative source of nicotine, e-liquids (and the devices used to 'vape' them) help to satisfy the nicotine cravings of ex-smokers in a much more substantial and efficient way than traditional nicotine therapy products do.

Over time, ex-smokers will 'tone down' their nicotine intake as their cravings become less frequent and intense by using an e-liquid with a lower nicotine concentration.

Eventually, the ex-smoker will be down to the point where their nicotine cravings are virtually non-existent, and they can use nicotine-free e-liquids or e-liquids with very low nicotine concentrations.

When nicotine cravings disappear, the desire to smoke goes with them.
